Momma Bird

Coming Soon to a Plane Near You!
by Stephen T. Wilson

Momma Bird is getting ready to lay eggs.  Who cares??  Pilots do.

I
t's springtime and momma is finding stubble, hay, trash, and all the makings of her nest under the newly exposed ground. Her beak is stuffed.  And, she just found the perfect spot.

A place that's nice and cozy!  It's even warm enough to keep her eggs the perfect 100 degrees while she takes flight!  So she thinks...

Parked Only 3 Hours, April 2, 2007, Sioux Falls, SD

It's inside the cowling atop the warm cylinder of an airplane engine.  The plane just landed.  It will fly again in only a few hours!  Little does she know...

Little does he* know...

There are many places to find clumps of hay, plastic, mud, grass, and oh yes, eggs!

Cowlings, spinners, ailerons, elevators, stabilizers, wings, air vents, between cylinders, on top of heat muffs, landing gear, inside ductwork, inside mufflers (ouch!)

"Whatever is that smell?!"  Preflight carefully and you'll rarely have a problem.  Nevertheless between flights in the springtime - BEWARE!

*In this prose, consider the pilot to be male.  Female pilots, beware too.

That's how I found Dax. He was sleeping in my wheel well, close to the warm, warm engine. Then I had to take him home because he was so cute.
