A Family Affair
In 2005, I moved three hours away from my barbershop quartet. I miss singing a lot. I'm afraid a life goal will pass me by if I don't find another good quartet, and SOON.
I've been in two good quartets thus far...
Mutual Fun Company, and
Tri-Town Sound
My goal is to compete in district barbershop competition, and place in the top 3. At 40 years old, my voice is about as good as it will ever be, so it's time to get on with it. Trouble is, I live in Sioux Falls now, not Omaha. There are NOT hundreds of singers here. It'll be up to me to network with music teachers, choir directors and the like to seek out and find good male singers - one by one.
Oh, but then to find the voices that match! And, talented musicians...
I'm a third generation barbershopper. My grandfather sang bass. My uncle Joe sings baritone. (Uncle Joe is second from the left, below.) I started out singing lead, but switched to bass which is where I belong.
Out of the blue, I got a call two months ago. It was Dennis Miller. He said, "Steve, if you're interested, you know my son Craig... We have a lead we'd like you to meet and see how we might sound together." Years ago, I sang lead in a Valentines Day pickup quartet with Dennis and Craig. As it turns out, this fellow Bill Trees is a past district champ.
What a deal! Barbershop found ME! I know, I know, we're not good YET, by a long-shot. But here we are learning music together at my house last night. What fun!
Stay tuned.

I watched that video and you know what I thought? I thought, "DAMN! Steve is so tall that he has to duck to go through his sliding glass doors!" Woo!

When you're supposed to do something, I do believe the world opens up some sort of schism and it happens in spite of ourselves.
