It's okay, we're fine! We did not crash.

I admit, I fly when and where many of you would not.

I fly all the time.  At night, when skies are cloudy, in wind - weather and circumstances are often less than ideal.

When you track of me on FlightAware.com and my radar track disappears, I'm not dead.  I did not crash.  I did not vanish!

Okay, I'll agree. Sometimes your concerns have merit.  Like this time...

I departed over the North Atlantic Ocean for Greenland.  570 miles and three hours over frigid water, there's limited chance of survival "in the unlikely event of a water landing".  An hour into the flight, just far enough over the ocean to prohibit a safe gliding return to land, the RADAR track stopped and FlightAware reported:  "result unknown (?)"

Flight Aware freaked you out.

At least one of you found a way to contact the control tower in Greenland to confirm we landed safely!  And, Jean-Pierre, the man to whom I was delivering the plane, admitted he did not sleep for two nights, certain we were lost at sea.

I appreciate the concern.  I really do.  Also, I want you to be less nervous the next time you watch me fly.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Why Steve is Probably Okay, Even Though FlightAware Say's He's Gone
1.  FlightAware does not track planes outside of RADAR contact, like across the ocean, in areas of RADAR outage, in areas RADAR cannot reach (like in the mountains), and in sparsely populated areas.
2.  FlightAware ONLY tracks planes on an IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) flight plan.  There are frequent occasions that it's necessary or desirable to cancel an IFR clearance.  So, when I "cancel IFR", the FlightAware track stops.  I'm still flying VFR (Visual Flight Rules), but no longer under RADAR control.
3.  FlightAware is not ALWAYS live.  It's pretty reliable, but like your Internet connection, it does not work 100% of the time.
4.  He can't call.  If my FlightAware track disappeared, and you're expecting my call upon landing, and I don't call you right away - assume:
        a)  I misplaced my phone, or my pickup.
        b)  My battery is dead.
        c)  I forgot to.
        d)  I can't for some other reasonable or unreasonable reason.

In any case, thank you for worrying.
